NYCPP unites six organizations that have worked for years to improve the lives of immigrants – 32BJ SEIU; ACFSME/DC37; UNITE HERE Local 100; the National Law Project; Laborers Local 79 and Laborers Local 78. These groups are committed to working together under the NYCPP umbrella to promote immigrant worker rights by developing an active base of working class immigrants in New York City who participate in shaping their own and our city's future.


Local 78


 

Laborers Local 78 is the union of over 4,000 asbestos, lead and hazardous waste laborers in New York City, Long Island and New Jersey.  The Local was organized in 1996, and is part of the Mason Tenders District Council and the New Jersey Building Laborers District Council.  The great majority of Local 78 members are immigrants who take pride in their contribution to the economies and communities of New York and New Jersey.

32BJ SEIU


32BJ SEIU represents over 115,000 building service workers including janitors, superintendants, doormen, and window cleaners in the Tri State area.  32BJ SEIU is the largest building service union in the country and the largest private sector union in New York City. It is affiliated with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a union that has grown more than 60% since 1996. Today, the SEIU is 2 million members strong and growing. It devotes almost half of its budget to organizing -- far more than most unions.

 

32BJ SEIU members come from 64 different countries and speak 28 different languages, but are united in the fight for fairness and decency for the region's working families. 32BJ members are hardworking immigrants and the children of immigrants working to build our nation.

AFSCME/District Council 37


AFSCME/District Council 37  represents 125,000 municipal workers in New York City and is comprised of 56 active union locals.

DC 37 members care for the sick, the aged, and our children. They maintain our bridges, parks, roads and subways. They staff our hospitals, schools, libraries, social service centers and city colleges.

 

DC 37 strives to have the on-the-job needs of its members met every day, but the organization also works for them in their communities. Through activism and coalition-building in neighborhoods througout the city, DC 37 fights for a better future for its membership, their families, and all of New York.

 

DC 37 is a part of AFSCME the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees with more than 1.4 million members nationwide.

UNITE HERE! Local 100


UNITE HERE! Local 100 represents over 6,000 restaurant and cafeteria workers in New York City, most of whom are immigrants. The organization is ethnically diverse, with high percentages of African-American, Latino, and Asian members.

The National Employment Law Project


NELP has advocated for over 40 years on behalf of low-wage workers, the poor, the unemployed, and other groups that face significant barriers to employment and government systems of support. Several common themes connect NELP's work: ensuring that employment laws cover all workers; supporting worker organizing along with alliance-building among key constituent groups involved with low-wage workers; helping workers stay connected to jobs and employment benefits; and expanding employment laws to meet the needs of workers and families amidst changing economic conditions.

Laborers Local 79


The Laborers Local 79 is a Construction & General Building union that is part of the Mason Tenders' District Council of Greater New York and Long Island that has emerged as one of the most progressive labor organizations in the nation. It is affiliated with Laborers International Union of North America.  Local 79 include construction workers that are part of the 15,000 members of the Mason Tenders District Council in New York.
